“Feminism means not judging women’s choices” “Body positivity means celebrating people loving their bodies” These are positive, uplifting quotes. Based on celebrating and raising up others, emphasising individuals happiness, because don’t we all want to live in a happier society? Of course we do.. so why are they sometimes controversial? In my opinion it is… Read More Individuality vs Societal change
Language is a funny beast. It’s fascinating, but also rarely straightforward. Online conversation can make for some interesting clashes in language: for example, I used to be a member of a forum that talked primarily about vintage fashion. Occasionally there’d be a thread where a member would say they wanted to find somewhere they could… Read More Language and talking at cross purposes
It might seem strange to apply a real world principle, like privilege, to a fictional character. But I think it can be quite interesting to consider it in this manner, as it has the potential benefit of allowing a degree of distance and objectivity. The reason I’ve chosen to do this is partly because I’m… Read More Is Wonder Woman privileged?
My kids have reached that age. Now the infuriating conversations have started. “Boys do this, girls don’t” “That’s a girls toy” “Girls don’t like that” No matter that, up until this point, I’ve always encouraged both children to play with and like whatever they want. I’m starting a new weekly series to celebrate inspiring women. I’m starting with the amazing Beth Ditto! I have to confess, I am late to the Beth Ditto fan club, having only actually listened to her for the first time last year. But I am a convert.
I’ve been thinking about this a lot recently, trying to decide whether to write about it or not, and last night I read an article which has made me realise I need to. So I want to talk to you about female friendships, my experience, and expectations.
This was originally a rant in a private group, but fuck it, I think it needs saying publicly. This is aimed at certain types of plus size women, the kind who harm a positive movement with their nastiness.
